Clothing

Lehengas (maxi skirt and top) are much easier to wear than sarees if you are unaccustomed to wearing sarees.
Sarees are 4-9 yards of fabric (depending on the style) that are draped, pleated and pinned. A blouse is required to wear a saree.
In addition to lehengas; salwars, anarkalis, and shararas are other easy to wear options.

Mmmm - at your own comfort. People in India still dress fairly modestly and cities are very populated. If you wear mini skirts, mini shorts, tight fitting clothes, sheer clothes, etc., you will likely stand out, and receive more attention.
-
Temples and heritage sites have stricter dress codes. Both men and women should wear clothes that cover their arms and knees. Avoid sheer and tight fitted clothes. Some sites may require women to cover their heads, carry a scarf in case.
Shoes need to be removed and left outside while visiting temples - we recommend wearing simple, inexpensive shoes.
Please be respectful, and follow photography and cellphone use as stipulated by the sites.
